MRI & MRA Brain for Stroke Screening Information

1. What information you can gain from an MRI Brain scan?
Possible findings will include the following:
i. Normal brain findings and/or normal blood vessels
ii. Stroke or other related findings
iii. Abnormal blood vessels like dilatation, narrowing or others findings
2. Who should take this package?
i. Generally elderly people will benefit from this package. People who have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, dementia and other risk factors
ii. For the younger people, who have recurrent headache, migraine or eiplepsy, etc
3. What this package includes?
i. MRI & MRA brain scan
ii. Chest X-ray
iii. Neuro Profile blood tests
iv. Ultrasound dopller carotid bilateral
v. Consultation by Neurologist
4. There may be extra findings from the MRI
There can be extra findings like tumour or others medical conditions. In that case, you may need to do another MRI brain with contrast medium. This means a solution will be injected by a medical personnel into one of your veins to enhance the images seen on the MRI. This will be in consultation with a doctor at another time with a different cost.
5. What are the other thing in this screening?
i. Chest X-ray is for general well-being assessment
ii. Neuro Profile blood tests is to assist the doctor to assess the patient
iii. Ultrasound doppler carotid bilateral is to assess the neck vessel on both sides. These vessels are directly connected to the brain. Detecting wheter they are normal or narrowed is necessary when talking about brain health
iv. Consultation by a Neurologist is offered for explanation of the overall tests in combination. Necessary advice will be given
6. How do you prepare for a MRI Brain?
There is no special preparation. However, 8 hours of fasting is necessary for blood tests.
7. What will happen in the MRI suite
i. A hospital gown will be given to you to wear
ii. You will lie down on the MRI table
iii. The procedure will take about 30-40 minutes
iv. Ear plugs will be provided to reduce the loud noise
8. Important information for your to inform us (doctor and imaging department staff)
It is important to inform us if you have any of the following:
i. Implants, pins, plates, screws, staples within your body
ii. Prosthetic joints or limbs
iii. Artificial heart valves or stents, cardiac pacemaker
iv. Aneurysm clips
v. Metallic foreign body in your eye, ear implant
vi. Undergo recent surgery
