- Kepala
- Leher
- Dada
- Perut & Pelvis
- Tengah Peha
1.0 Why Whole-Body MRI is recommended?
Whole-body MRIs have the potential to transform disease detection and prevention. Due to MRIs’ already high imaging detail and non-reliance on radiation, the expanded technology can visualize multiple areas of the body and potentially identify growths/tumors which are clinically undetectable.
1.1 Disease detection
As a few examples, full-body MRIs can assess for and potentially detect the following:
a) Neurodegenerative conditions (Conditions that damage your nervous system over time, especially the brain)
b) Spinal cord injuries/abnormalities
c) Degenerative spine disease/ Prolapse intervertebral disc (Conditions that lead to the spine to gradually lose its normal structure and function)
d) Musculoskeletal conditions, like arthritis and tumors
e) Cancerous tumours and types of inflammation like abscess
The earlier these conditions are diagnosed, the quicker a person can start treatment and be on the road to disease management or recovery. Detecting these issues can empower patients and doctors to manage, treat or cure ailments. It can also give patients knowledge about their health to help them make informed decisions about their lifestyle or diet.
2.0 Please be aware
Malignant tumours (cancerous cells) of less than 1 cm have low sensitivity of detection on whole-body MRI. As with all other tests, exclusion of a malignant tumour (cancerous cells) can never be absolute.
MRI findings if considered clinically relevant will be reported to you. It is important to stress that whole-body MRI is not intended to replace standard screening tests (mammogram, colonoscopy, pap-test, blood testing etc.) that are used to diagnose small malignant tumours in specific organs.
Whole-body MRI cannot identify malignant tumour for which the diagnosis is mainly clinical or through blood test (e.g. skin tumour or leukaemia).
As this is a screening procedure, if some conditions are detected it may require further investigation and your doctor will advice you accordingly.
3.0 What to expect during the MRI
3.1 The Procedure
a) You will lie flat on a cushioned table that slides into the MRI machine. The scan will cover from your head to mid thigh.
b) You will need to remain still throughout the procedure to ensure clear, accurate images.
c) A whole-body MRI typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes.
3.2 Noise and Comfort
a) The MRI machine produces loud tapping or knocking sounds during the scan. Earplugs or headphones will be provided for comfort. You can also choose your own music to listen to.
3.3 Communication with the Radiographer
a) You will be able to communicate with the technician via an intercom if you feel uncomfortable.
4.0 Before the MRI Scan
4.1 Preparation Guidelines
a) Wear loose, comfortable, metal-free clothing (you may be asked to change into a hospital gown).
b) Remove all metal objects (jewellery, piercings, watches, etc.).
c) Inform the imaging department staff if you have any implants, pacemakers, or other medical devices.
4.2 Dietary Restrictions
a) No fasting is required for this procedure.
4.3 Medical History Disclosure
a) Provide a full medical history, including allergies and prior surgeries.
b) Notify imaging department staff if you are pregnant or suspect you may be.
